Hidden Gems of Thai Medicine

What makes traditional systems of medicine around the world different and unique?

The answer is in the land, plants, climate and specific dis-eases in that part of the world.

Thailand is bordered by Malaysia, Burma, Cambodia and Lao, and is right in the center of the trading route between China and India. Thailand as a result has been

being exposed to many influences over history; making Thai Medicine unique and diverse.

Thai Medicine remains Buddhist in Tradition; Buddha is viewed as the the ultimate physician. Buddha's teachings are viewed as the ultimate healing tool to eradicate suffering.

Traditional Thai Medicine incorporates the Buddhist principles of mindfulness Loving Kindness, Compassion, Sympathetic Joy and Equanimity.

Most non-Thai people are familiar with Thai Massage, as a popular Thai therapy.

Just as massage is only one small part of Chinese Medicine or Ayurveda (Indian Medicine); Thai Medicine is also rich with knowledge and wisdoms of herbal medicine, diet, astrology and spiritual practices.

There are five clear branches of Traditional Thai Medicine. Thai Massage falls into the branch of External Medicine.

The five branches are woven together by Buddhist principles and Five Element Theory, creating a unique, comprehensive system of healing wisdom.

Similar to Ayurveda, Thai Medicine uses Five Element theory to understand individuality, diagnose imbalances and offer guidelines to a holistic and balanced lifestyle.

While Ayurvedic Medicine and Traditional Thai Medicine share certain similarities, they are very unique and different.

Just as ginger and turmeric are from the same family- they would never substitute one another in a recipe.

There is so much beauty and immense medical wisdom to be found in Traditional Thai Medicine. Sadly many modern schools teaching Thai Therapies focus on massage without teachings key traditions and links within the holistic system.

Some incredible and lesser known therapies in Thai Medicine therapies include Yam kang (fire foot treatment), Ched Hak (scraping/Guasha), Tok Sen (tapping therapy) and herbal compresses.
