Element Theory, Doshas & the Five Layers of the Body

White Sand and Stone

In Thai Massage/Thai Medicine, healing begins with understanding two essential maps: The Elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Space and Consciousness) and the Five Layers of the physical body (Skin, Muscle, Sen, Bone, and Organ). Together, these frameworks reveal how imbalance arises, where it resides in the body, and how skillful touch can support the return to balance.

This two-part workshop, offered through the Thai Elements branch of ThaiVedic School, integrates classical Thai medical theory with direct experiential practice, guiding practitioners from elemental understanding into embodied therapeutic application.

Part I — Thai Elements: Elements & Doshas- The Living Body

One of the pillars of Thai Massage and Traditional Thai Medicine is the Thai Element Theory and the Dosas (causative factors of imbalance). A solid understanding of these principles is essential for proper assessment and effective treatment planning. By recognizing each person’s unique elemental constitution and their tendencies toward imbalance, practitioners can make more precise and supportive choices in their therapeutic approach.

When we understand strengths and weaknesses through the lens of the elements, we can make wiser decisions, whether it’s selecting the right yoga or movement practice, choosing foods that support balance, or determining which therapeutic techniques will be most beneficial.

Class content:

-  Doshas as causes and expressions of imbalance

-  Constitution vs. temporary imbalance

-  Elemental qualities felt through touch and observation

-  Elemental assessment practices with partners

-  Treatment application

Part I clarifies: What is happening? Why is imbalance present?

Part II — Thai Elements: Sen & the Five Layers of the Body

Building directly on Element Theory and Doshas, Part II explores how elemental imbalance manifests through the Five Layers of the Body, with special emphasis on the sen layer as the central working field of Thai Massage.

In Traditional Thai Medicine, the physical body is understood through five interconnected layers( Skin, Muscle, Sen, Bone, and Organ) all belonging to the Earth Element.

While each layer offers valuable diagnostic information, it is the sen layer that forms the living bridge between structure, movement, and change, making it the primary doorway for Thai Massage.

This workshop explores the Five Layers with special emphasis on the sen as the meeting point of earth and wind, where elemental imbalance becomes sensation, pain, restriction, and flow.

Through guided teaching and hands-on practice, we will refine our ability to listen through the hands, work with depth without force, and apply pressure, rhythm, and stillness in ways that allow the sen to respond naturally.

The class offers a practical framework for reading the body from surface to depth, while using the sen as the primary guide for intelligent, responsive treatment. This workshop is ideal for practitioners who wish to deepen their sensitivity, sharpen their diagnostic awareness, and strengthen their understanding of the sen as the heart of Thai Massage.

Class Content:

-  The Five Layers: Skin, Muscle, Sen, Bone, Organ

-  Elemental expression within each layer

- The Sen as the primary pathway of wind and change

- Layer-by-layer palpation and assessment

- Sen-based techniques and therapeutic applications

- Integrating Elements, Doshas, and depth of touch

Part II clarifies: Where imbalance lives, and how skillful touch responds.

Please note you must attend part I to attend part II.

Together, these two parts reflect the ThaiVedic approach:

- Elements & Doshas reveal the nature of imbalance

- The Five Layers reveal its location

- The Sen reveal the body’s response and capacity for change

This workshop offers a grounded, lineage-informed framework for practitioners seeking to deepen diagnostic clarity, refine therapeutic touch, and embody Thai Medicine principles through Thai Massage
